What can I do with a major in Microbiology?

What Activities Could Microbiology Majors Do?

Microbiologists investigate the growth, structure, development, and characteristics of microscopic organisms such as bacteria, algae, or fungi to understand their relationship to human, plant, and animal health.  Microbiologists may investigate the relationship between organisms and disease, including the control of epidemics and the effects of antibiotics on microorganisms.   They research the use of bacteria and other micro-organisms to develop vitamins, antibiotics, amino acids, grain alcohol, sugars, and polymers.  Microbiologists may conduct chemical analyses of substances such as acids, alcohols, and enzymes.  They can perform tests on water, food, and the environment to detect harmful microorganisms and to obtain information about sources of pollution and contamination.

Most microbiologists specialize in environmental, food, agricultural, or industrial microbiology; virology (the study of viruses); immunology (the study of mechanisms that fight infections); or bioinformatics (the process of integrating molecular biology and information science).  Medical microbiologists study the relationship between organisms and disease or the effects of antibiotics on microorganisms.  Microbiologists may also provide laboratory services for health departments, for community environmental health programs, and for physicians needing information for diagnosis and treatment.  Many microbiologists use biotechnology to advance knowledge of cell reproduction and human disease.
